New UK Banknotes to Celebrate Four of Britain’s Favourite Animals
The Bank of England has revealed the four animals set to feature on the next series of UK banknotes, marking an exciting new chapter in the future of cash.
The Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee and European hedgehog have been selected following an unprecedented public consultation, which attracted nearly half a million participants. The animals will feature on the future £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, although the Bank of England has yet to confirm which animal will appear on each denomination.
The strong public response highlights the continued connection people have with cash and the banknotes they use every day. According to UK Finance, around 1.4 million people in the UK mainly rely on cash for their everyday spending, while many others use it alongside digital payment methods.
Beyond their new designs, the next generation of banknotes will incorporate advanced security and accessibility features to help ensure they remain secure, durable and easy to recognise. The design process will now begin, with the first notes expected to enter circulation in the coming years.
At Loomis, we understand the important role cash continues to play in the UK economy. From collection and transportation to secure cash handling, protecting the movement of cash remains essential to keeping money circulating safely and efficiently.
While we await the unveiling of the final designs, one thing is clear: the future of banknotes will combine familiar symbols of British wildlife with the security features needed to support cash for generations to come.
